Post-Operative Crown and Bridges Instructions

POST - CROWN AND BRIDGE INSTRUCTIONS

After the Appointment

If you receive local anesthesia your mouth may remain numb for 3-4 hours. Avoid eating, drinking hot liquids, or chewing until the numbness wears off to prevent accidental injury. Mild soreness or tenderness around the treated tooth and jaw is normal for a few days. Over the counter pain medication (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) can help, unless otherwise advised by your doctor.

Temporary Crowns or Bridges

  • A temporary crown or bridge protects your prepared teeth until permanent restoration is placed.
  • Avoid chewing hard, sticky, or crunchy food (like gum, caramel or ice) on that side to prevent the temporary crown or bridge from loosening.
  • No flossing. Regular (gentle) brushing and gargling only until permanent crown or bridge is placed.
  • Final crown or bridge will be much better than the temporary.

Permanent Crown or Bridge Care

  • Your new crown or bridge will function and look like a natural tooth.
  • You might notice slight sensitivity to temperature or pressure for the first few days – this is normal and will improve. You may take over the counter analgesic in the meantime, if needed.
  • Continue daily brushing and flossing, paying extra attention around the margins where the crown or bridge meets the gumline to prevent decay or gum disease.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene and schedule regular dental check-ups to prevent future decay or infection.

Bite and Comfort

  • Your bite may feel slightly different for the first few days. If it feels uneven, or if you experience discomfort while chewing, contact our office for a simple bite adjustment.
  • Do not wait too long – unbalanced bite pressure can cause soreness or damage to the tooth or restoration.

Long Term Care

  • Crowns and bridges can last many years with proper care, but they still rely on healthy supporting teeth and gums.
  • Avoid using your teeth to open packages, bite fingernails, or chew non-food objects.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene and regular dental check ups every 6 months for best results.
