Post-Operative Nightguard Intructions

Wearing Your Night Guard

• To get used to wearing your nightguard, we suggest wearing it during the day sporadically (ie, while watching tv, driving, cooking dinner, etc.) each time for a little bit longer until you become used to having it in your mouth.
• Wear your nightguard every night while you sleep – unless otherwise directed by your dentist.
• It may feel tight or unusual for the first few nights - this is normal, and most patients adjust within 1-2 weeks.
• If you experience significant discomfort, sore teeth, or jaw pain – stop wearing your nightguard and contact our office for adjustment.

Insertion and Removal

• Insert your nightguard with your fingers – do not bite it into place.
• To remove lift evenly on both sides to avoid distortion or cracking.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean your nightguard every morning after use:

• Rinse under cool or lukewarm water. Never use hot water – it can warp the material.
• Brush night guard gently with a soft toothbrush using mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste.
• Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing.
• Avoid soaking in alcohol, mouthwash, or hot water.
• Occasionally, soak it in denture-cleaning solution for a deep clean.

Storage

• Always store your nightguard in the ventilated case to prevent bacterial growth and warping.
• Keep the case clean and dry, and out of reach of pets (they are often attracted to the smell and will chew).

Care and Lifespan

• With proper care, your nightguard can last several years, depending on your grinding habits and the material type.
• If it becomes loose, cracked or uncomfortable, contact our office for evaluation or replacement.
