Post-Operative Instructions: Moderate Oral Sedation

Post-Operative Instructions: Moderate Oral Sedation

Purpose

You received oral moderate sedation medication to help you relax during your dental treatment. The effects can last several hours after your appointment. Please follow the instructions below carefully to ensure your comfort and safety.

After Your Appointment

  • You must have a responsible adult escort you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.
  • Rest quietly for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activity, driving, or operating machinery for at least 24 hours.
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids unless otherwise advised by your dentist or physician.
  • Do not make important decisions, sign legal documents, or return to work or school until the next day or once the sedation effects have fully worn off.
  • Begin with clear fluids and light foods as tolerated. If you experience nausea, wait before eating solid foods.
  • Most people feel fully alert again within 12-24 hours.

Possible After-Effects

  • Drowsiness, sluggishness, or delayed reaction times — this is normal and may last several hours.
  • Mild headache or dizziness — rest and hydrate as needed.
  • Nausea or upset stomach — avoid heavy meals until you feel normal again.
  • Temporary forgetfulness about the procedure may occur.

What to Avoid

  • Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks requiring alertness for 24 hours.
  • Do not consume alcohol, sedatives, or recreational drugs for 24 hours.
  • Avoid taking additional medications (including over-the-counter sleep aids or pain medications containing codeine) unless prescribed or approved by your dentist or physician.
  • Avoid being left alone for the rest of the day after your appointment.
