Post-Operative Instructions: Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Post-Operative Instructions: Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Purpose

You received nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) during your dental treatment to help you relax. The effects wear off quickly after the gas is stopped, but please follow the instructions below to ensure your comfort and safety.

After Your Appointment

  • Remain seated until your dental team confirms you are fully alert.
  • You will have breathed oxygen for several minutes at the end of treatment — this helps clear nitrous oxide from your system.
  • Most patients feel completely normal within 5–10 minutes.
  • You may return to normal activities and drive yourself home once you feel alert and steady.

Possible After-Effects

  • Mild headache or light-headedness (usually resolves quickly).
  • Slight drowsiness — rest, if needed.
  • Nausea may occur if you ate a large meal beforehand; drink water and eat lightly until you feel better.

What to Avoid

  • Do not consume alcohol or recreational drugs for 24 hours.
  • Avoid making major decisions or operating heavy machinery if you still feel groggy.
  • If you experience persistent dizziness, nausea, or confusion, contact our office or seek medical attention.
