POST – ROOT CANAL TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

After the Appointment

Your mouth may remain numb for 1-3 hours. Avoid eating, drinking hot liquids, or chewing until the numbness wears off to prevent accidental injury. Mild soreness or tenderness around the treated tooth and jaw is normal for a few days. Over the counter pain medication (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) can help, unless otherwise advised by your doctor.

Protection of the Tooth

  • To protect your root canal treated tooth, it is highly advisable to have a crown placed as soon as possible.
  • After root canal therapy, the tooth becomes more brittle and prone to fracture because it no longer has a living nerve or blood supply.
  • Delaying or not placing a crown may result in cracking, fracture, or loss of the tooth, which could require further treatment or extraction.

Oral Hygiene

  • Continue your regular brushing and flossing, but be gentle around the treated area for the first few days.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene and schedule regular dental check-ups to prevent future decay or infection.

Discomfort or Swelling

  • Mild tenderness for 2-3 days is common.
